API 650 TANK
Prior to 2023 the last recorded date Shell USA, Inc had an API 650 Tank field fabricated and tested at Shell Lubricants, Galena Park, Texas facility was 36 years ago in 1987. March 2023 saw another major accomplishment for Decundi. Based on discussion (interview) with Shell and Decundi’s expertise with API 650 field fabricated Tanks, Shell awarded a contract to Decundi to carry out inspection during the field fabrication and testing of a 150000-gallon API 650 Tank at this Shell Lubricants location.
Inspections for the field fabrication of API 650 included checks for assurance of the level and elevation of the foundation and these inspections are carried out using a Theodolite. Following inspection for level and elevation of the concrete foundation we inspect for fit up and welding of the Annular Bottom Plate, floor plates, erection of the shell for the wall of the tank plus installation of nozzles and manways.
Decundi also carried out inspections during PAUT of the full penetration welding at the Annular Bottom Plates and the shell rings plus vacuum box testing of the fillet welds at the floor plates. Pneumatic testing of the ¼” NPT weep holes at the reinforcement and hydrotesting for a minimum duration of 24 hours is also included in our scope.
Inspection during surface preparation and painting was carried out in accordance with SSPC-SP3 power tool cleaning conducted using a power wirebrush at 2” width at both sides of the weld seam and at the nozzle neck and manways and reinforcing pads, plus visual inspection for cleanliness of the substrate to conform to SSPC-SP10 near white metal and following this completed the inspection of the coating.
